British psychologist Linda Blair told Sky News, that listening to the cheerful Christmas music too much might be harmful to one’s mental health. She explaining that excessive exposure to Christmas music in the car or at stores reminds people of all the things they need to do before the holiday arrives.

“You’re simply spending all of your energy trying not to hear what you’re hearing,” Blair told Sky News. “It might make us feel that we’re trapped – it’s a reminder that we have to buy presents, cater for people, organize celebrations,” she explains. “Some people will react to that by making impulse purchases, which the retailer likes. Others might just walk out of the shop. It’s a risk.”

Blair suggests that people working in retail are at a high risk of being mentally drained and develop anxiety because of continuous playing of Christmas music in stores. “People working in the shops at Christmas have to learn how to tune it out Christmas music because if they don’t it really does make you unable to focus on anything else,” she said. “You’re simply spending all of your energy trying not to hear what you’re hearing.”
