When Hannah Rhudy, 14, from Chesterfield, Virginia heard the tragic news that 4-month-old twins were reportedly left in a hot car for several hours and died in her hometown, her heart sank with grief. At the same time, the wheels in the bright middle schooler’s mind were also turning as to how such a horrifying tragedy could be prevented in the future.

The twins, a boy and girl were reportedly found unresponsive in the SUV after police officers believed their father accidentally left them inside. Rhudy, an aspiring kindergarten teacher who adores children, came up with a clever solution to avoid these tragic and senseless deaths from occurring.

She came up with a simple yet potentially lifesaving concept, or what she refers to as a “community initiative.” She created a car tag program where a tag is placed on the rearview mirror that reads: “Baby In, Baby Out.” So, a busy parent can flip the tag over when the baby is in or out of the car, which will be in plain view of his or her eyesight.

“Dozens of children die of heatstroke each year in cars whose temperatures, even on relatively mild days, can quickly soar past 100 degrees. Many of those children were left behind by a distracted caregiver,” according to The New York Times. With Rhudy’s vital car tag program, she will hopefully change these disturbing statistics. “Kids are our future and we need to make sure they are safe,” she said.
