Sixty-eight-year-old John T. Fitzmaurice passed away on Nov. 6, a homeless military man who perished on the streets. Unfortunately, his fate is not uncommon, the sad reality is that almost 1 in 10 homeless people is a former soldier.

Funeral director Bill Lawler told the Boston Herald that in the case of deceased homeless veterans without any next of kin, “we get in touch with the Department of Veterans Services so he can have a proper burial,” but in Fitzmaurice’s case, he took a different approach.

The funeral home and one of the board members of Catholic Memorial School proposed that the students should organize an honorable send-off for the former soldier. The idea received a warm welcome and in no time the teens managed to organize a proper military funeral service.

On Nov. 15, attendees of Catholic Memorial School went the extra mile to honor a deceased veteran they’d never met.
