Despite all the avid jokes in pop culture, being a mail carrier actually can be rather dangerous. All those cartoons you watched as a kid weren’t lying about those dogs getting pleasure out of barking at or chasing down the mailman.

Similarly, cats can be pretty unfriendly toward our package deliverers too (or just packages in general) but rarely do we ever hear about the dangers of other animals for mail carriers.

While our pets may have a little too much fun terrorizing anyone who comes outside of our door, there are animals in the world who can be just as territorial over our own homes. If for some reason your mail hasn’t shown up in weeks, don’t be so quick to punish your furbaby. The culprit may be someone else.

One Wisconsin family was left baffled when their mail suddenly stopped showing up to their home. They believed it had just been a slow delivery day until that day stretched into a week. Deciding that enough was enough, homeowner Matt Pierce decided to confront his mail carrier after seeing him out and about.
The mail carrier then told Pierce that his house was a safety concern and mail deliverers are not required to deliver the mail if they feel like their life is in danger. The safety concern on Pierce’s home was actually a robin’s nest built just above the mailbox on the light fixture. Mama birds are known for being overprotective of their young and will attack if you come too close.

Despite what your grade school teachers might have taught you about red robins, these small creatures can be very dangerous if you get too close to them or their nests. Pierce was told by his mail carrier that if there’s a chance of him getting attacked he will not deliver the mail.

Pierce and his family were given an ultimatum, either remove the nest or retrieve the mail from their local post office. However, the mama bird was still taking care of her young, so Pierce thought it would be too inhumane to knock the nest down leaving them with the latter option.

Luckily, their mail carrier came up with a different solution. They put a bucket outside the front of their house where all mail could be dropped into safely and securely. USPS states that they are happy both sides came up with a solution. It definitely turned out to be a win-win-win situation all around.
