Officer Gibson loved protecting the children of District 6 because it was a rewarding experience that allowed the kids to see the police officers as friends and allies.

“They see us in a different light than they see us just being somebody that carries a gun and puts people in jail,” Gibson explained. “Here they get to see us as part of the school and they get to learn, ‘Hey, the police are our friends.’”

However, there was one particular student that tugged at Gibson’s heart. In and out of 8 foster homes, the little boy was a victim of recent child abuse. The student and the police officer had already formed a strong bond with the little boy calling him “Officer” then “Officer Dad” then just plain “Dad.”

“He was searching. He was a child definitely in need of parents. That’s what he wanted.”

Even though Gibson and his wife Kimber were told that the boy was considered “unadoptable” because of his behavior, they knew they needed to help this child.

“He said, ‘In all my years in law enforcement, I’ve never felt led to do something, but I feel like God’s telling me that we can help this one.’ So, I was on board,” Kimber said.

After successfully becoming the little boy’s foster parents, the Gibson’s decided to officially adopt him.
