‘Bye, Best Friend:’ Heartbroken Horse Breaks Down at Beloved Owner’s Funeral

Most people say ‘man’s best friend’ is a dog, but for one animal lover from Brazil, his best friend was his beloved horse, Sereno. Wagner Lima had an amazing bond with his horse. From riding, galloping and cantering to petting, combing and feeding the precious animal, Lima took the time to nurture Sereno. The two were inseparable and enjoyed eight wonderful years together.

Then one day, Sereno’s world came crashing down on him. Tragically, Lima got into a horrific motorcycle accident and died shortly after the crash. Lost and confused, Sereno just couldn’t understand why Lima had “disappeared.” He was completelly heartbroken. Lima’s family knew they had to intervene, so the poor animal could truly comprehend the loss.

Lima’s family decided to bring Sereno to his funeral. Wagner’s brother, Wando Lima, took the reins and guided him to the outside of the church. He then walked with Sereno to the hearse outside so he could be part of the procession. When they approached the coffin, Sereno picked up Lima’s scent and had a human-like reaction. 

His way of grieving his best pal started with “pained neighing noises.” Sereno then rested his head on the coffin. The heartbroken horse was saying “farewell” to his best friend. As the pallbearers carried the coffin to the cemetery, Sereno couldn’t stop whimpering. “This horse was everything to him.” said Wando Lima. “It was as if the horse knew what was happening and wanted to say goodbye.”
