During last stages of training with Colorado State Patrol, 21 year-old, army veteran, Taylor Thyfault, was killed while on duty. His mother, Carole Adler, was overwhelmed by grief and her only comfort was to send text messages to his old phone. She knew he will never reply, but she felt the need to tell him how she feels anyway. One day she sent another touching message, saying how much she loved and missed him.

It turned out that her messages were going to Sgt. Kell Husley, of the Greeley Police Department. He had gotten a new phone, but Taylor’s old number. Initially he though that the emotional messages are sent to him by mistake and replied: “I don’t think your texts are going where you think they are.”

It did not take long before Carole told him who she was and who she was texting. He offered to change his number, but she insisted that he keep it: his job was something her son wanted to do, and it would have made him proud.

The two still text each other occasionally and believe that Taylor is watching over them.
