I have to admit, the first time I saw this math problem, I was not impressed. It looks easy enough, right? Once you learn the correct answer you may change your mind. Apparently, most of us have been doing it all wrong thanks to an outdated method we learned in grade school.

Most of us grew up learning the phrase “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.” For those who don’t know, this sentence in an acronym for the correct order of operations. (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction) Pretty straightforward, right?
