According to a royal historian named Hugo Vickers, the queen uses her purse as a secret signal to her staff.

When she wants to end a conversation, she moves her purse from one hand into another.

That one simple gesture shows her staff members that she wants to be ushered away.

“It would be very worrying if you were talking to the queen and saw the handbag move from one hand to the other,” said Vickers.
