Since he retired, Douglas has dealt with dementia, emphysema, and many strokes. Maxine often had to call Station 9 of Dekalb County’s fire department many times to come to the aid of her husband. The firemen at the station begun to get used to receiving frequent calls from their residence. They would immediately respond and come to their home with medical aid, say hello and see how the couple was doing, and then go on with their day as normal.

It was not until this one call that the station finally realized who Douglas actually was.

They learned that he was in fact Lieutenant Marks, the oldest retired firefighter in the county. They were shocked to find out he once had been one of them.

Once they discovered this information, a bond between the heroes of different generations immediately formed. The visits to the Marks’ home became so much more meaningful the more the department learned about Douglas’ story.

In the 1960s, Douglas was only the 38th firefighter hired in the department, which now boasts 650 firemen. He was also Dekalb County’s very first paramedic, and proudly served in the Army as the Korean War blazed on. Before he became ill, he retired back in 1985.

Even though the department had been called to the couple’s home for medical assistance, the men noticed that their home needed some serious repairs. The two needed a brand new deck fit with a ramp for the veteran’s wheelchair. Even the insulation, flooring, and roof began to fall apart.

Before Douglas sadly passed in March of last year, his new family made sure to take care of the repairs.
