The British royal family is perhaps one of the most privileged in the world, and when the not-so-royal people like us think about their family lives, piles of laundry and a messy home is certainly not what comes to mind.

But giving us a new insight into their day-to-day lives are the next generation of British monarchs, namely Prince William and his wife Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton.

The couple who has two beautiful children, almost 4-year-old Prince George and almost 2-year-old Princess Charlotte, are proving that parenting young children means experiencing common struggles no matter how royal and rich.

This royal family appears to have all the help they need in dealing with dirty diapers and laundry. And seeing how happy and put together the whole clan looks, to the world, Kate appears to be the perfect mom. But recently she made an announcement that resonated with mothers all over the globe.

Promoting Out of the Blue films with Best Beginnings, at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in Britain, Kate decided to make a very heartfelt and honest speech to highlight the emotional struggles that go along with raising children. She begins the speech thusly:

“Personally, becoming a mother has been such a rewarding and wonderful experience. However, at times it has also been a huge challenge- even for me who has support at home that most mothers do not.”

The challenge that Kate is trying to bring in focus is the wide variety of emotions, including isolation and helplessness, a new mother might experience, all the while feeling the need to keep up an out-worldly appearance of being completely happy. She says:

“Nothing can really prepare you for you the sheer overwhelming experience of what it means to become a mother. It is full of complex emotions of joy, exhaustion, love, and worry, all mixed together. Your fundamental identity changes overnight. You go from thinking of yourself as primarily an individual, to suddenly being a mother, first and foremost.”

To all the mothers out there who are reading this, it really seems like a shocker to hear from Kate that motherhood was not an easy transition and that she too went through some of the same emotions as many of us!

Because mental health doesn’t pile up like dirty dishes or the dust bunnies under the furniture, it’s a problem that goes unnoticed for many new moms. According to Kate:

“Some of this fear is about the pressure to be a perfect parent; pretending we’re all coping perfectly and loving every minute of it. It’s right to talk about motherhood as a wonderful thing, but we also need to talk about its stresses and strains. It’s ok not to find it easy. Asking for help should not be seen as a sign of weakness. Conversations are crucial for mental wellbeing and they should be part of everyday family life. Talking about a problem with a friend or another trusted person can be the beginning of getting better.”

Kate is hoping that her speech along with a series of films created by Out of the Blue organization for Best Beginnings will encourage women to dig out of their shell and not feel ashamed to talk and seek help for any emotional struggle they experience in their new role as a mom.

This video of Kate’s speech in its entirety really makes us admire her dedication to the cause!

All we can say is that Princess Diana would have been very proud of Kate’s speech! Her sincierity and honesty will go far in helping women not just in Britain but around the world in lessening the stigma around mental health issues in mothers-to-be and new moms alike. Here is one more reason we can’t stop loving Kate for all she is!
